Adult Attention Deficit / Hyperactivity (ADHD)
Focused Assessment

If you are considering an ADHD focused assessment:
  1. The first step for you is to make an appointment to see your family doctor if you haven’t been in to see them lately. Your doctor can help confirm that there is no other medical reason for your symptoms.
  2. The second step is to track down some of your childhood school records. If you've lost your school records over the years (who hasn't!) you should call the schools district to inquire about how to get a copy of your records. This is very important as the diagnosis of ADHD can not be made without some evidence of some symptoms before age 12.

ADHD focused assessments include:
  • a file review,
  • a brief battery of cognitive tests,
  • a diagnostic and background interview, and
  • the administration of applicable questionnaires.
Related educational / medical / workplace / psychiatric records are incorporated into the findings.

Some common uses for an ADHD focused assessment include:
  • Diagnostic, prognostic, and treatment recommendation purposes
  • ADHD assessments can be very helpful in planning education, work, or return to work - as well as to provide documentation if work or school accommodations are needed.

If you decide on the assessment:
  • I will send you a set of questionnaires to fill in. One will be for you and one to be completed by someone else that knows you very well (spouse, partner, adult child, parent). You can bring these complete forms to our face-to-face meeting.
  • On the day of our assessment, you will work with myself and a PhD practicum student that administers these tests as part of their training.
  • We will get together for a 2-3 hour interview. This will include lots of background questions about your demographics, school, youth, ADHD symptoms, screen for other mental health difficulties, medical history, mental health history, functioning at home and socially and at work.
  • If possible, it would be great to have someone who knows you well available if we needed to call with some follow-up questions.
  • We will do 60-90 minutes testing of various cognitive abilities (memory, speed, attention etc.)
  • You will complete 60-90 minutes of additional mental health questionnaires.

After all this (which takes most of a day together), I will go over all the records you brought, the questionnaires, tests, the interviews and make a diagnosis (if appropriate).

All this will be put together into a 15-20 page report that I will send to you. Reports can be expected within 2 weeks of testing.

Costs:
ADHD focused assessment is billed per hour and an average assessment takes about 15 hours including file review, cognitive testing, interview, administration of questionnaires, scoring, interpretation, and report writing.
